Still to this day, and probably for as long as I ever look at this cartoon, I'll second-guess the editorial decision to use "Log Off" instead of "Log Out." The eternal struggle. This days-long internal debate after probably making one of the all-time worst classroom demos of my life in front of a handful of students. The linear perspective and the floor mat and even the googly eyes required almost as much white-out as India ink. Then Photoshop was still needed to tweak it to where it was somewhat presentable. It's still somewhat wonky, but what isn't.
Update: So I decided it made more sense (not that that's ever really a going concern with a cartoon) to use "out" especially since it phonetically reminded me of the "shout it out" marketing campaign of yore. Dates me, but newspaper readers would be the prime demographic of such an appeal to nostalgia.
After digitally reworking the original print file, and then prepping a web version, I had to rummage around the computer for wherever the other variation went, so as to trash it and prevent any future confusion. But lo & behold this panel from as recent as 2020 - back in the black & white days -showed up:
Well okay then, if it now ever does wind up getting used, I'll run with the "Off." Which come to think of it also dovetails with the ubiquitous, horrid and poisonous mosquito repellent that most Alaskans are familiar with.
But then after looking at the already published print version, it occurred to me that in order to further enhance the amusement, it would have been a nice touch to add maybe splinters, or perhaps some indication of woody texture, if not an actual log. Uh-oh, now there goes another beaver down a rabbit hole.
