Posting the "flat" for comparison + contrast between the two phases. It's a good demonstration of how much depth is created by using gradations to enhance the volume of shapes, and how value adds extra dimension to the drawing.
Also an explanation is perhaps in order here, since preliminary results showed that nobody (at least under the age of fifty) even knew what the source proverb was. Which meant my oh-so clever homonym meant nothing, and this was maybe at the most just a simple funny picture.
To be sure, it's a scenario that the vast majority of pet owners can easily and immediately relate to. As opposed to sharing the morning paper and cup of coffee with the dog (cats occasionally on Sundays).
