"Sisyphus"

A peculiar ritual I observed being re-enacted over my time spent in Savannah was the labors of workers who would spend their days patrolling the sidewalks armed with jet-pack leaf blowers. It reminded me of Albert Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus," which underscored some of the same quest for meaning and existential crisis that was on my personal peripheral awareness at the time. Not to mention the proverbial Sisyphean task of graduate school.

  1. I drove past property maintenance workers "blowin' in the wind" today on my way home from the dentist. Where they'd been told to put the leaves did not fit with nature's plans for today's wind direction. Beautiful image of human insistence that natural forces are irrelevant and nature's blithe, effortless rebuttal.

  2. I've seen people work on a single leaf for five or ten minutes with those damned machines. Nature always wins.

  3. Yep: notice the conspicuous absence of any reference to snowfall - as a migrating Alaskan it's much easier to instead point & laugh at the foolishness of foreign customs. Ha, those silly Southerners... eh...
